A Boy and His Gram

Dear Jack,

You discovered someone and something very important this weekend. I know that we had seen your Gram in Houston just the weekend before, but you are so very slow to warm up to people and there was so much going on with the zoo and the beach and the strand that you didn't really key into your Gram much.

But in the quiet of your own home, you found that Gram, like your other grandparents, responds very well to the words, "Book? Read now?"

I really don't know how many times you asked your Gram to read to you, but I do know that she said "yes" every time, until she had to leave to go back to Houston.

I also know that when it was time for her to leave, we tried to get you to go to Uncle Jonathan to read. He sat in the chair Gram had used and held the very same Richard Scarry book. You took the book from him, put it in the other chair and walked over to your Gram, pulled on her leg and said, "Book? Read now?"

I know she wished more than anything that she had all the time in the world to sit and read with you. After all, she's the woman who sat in a chair and read these very same books to your dad, over and over and over again thirty years ago.

She's an expert, and you could tell.

Love,
Mom
