First Word

Dear Jack,

There is an evolution of a first word.

First, you have to say it.

Then you have to say it again to make sure the parents heard it.

Then you have to say it on command to prove you know what you are saying.

Finally, you have to say it in context to prove the word has meaning.

I am happy to report that you have jumped through all of these lexicographic hoops for us and I can report that your first word is fish.

You started it at the zoo on Mother's Day when we were spending so much time at the aquarium and I kept saying "fish" to you and you kept mimicking me, saying, "pishhhhhh."

Then at home I got you to say "pishhhhhh" for your dad, but he was unconvinced that you were doing anything other than repeating a syllable.

Finally, today your dad took you and your sister to PetSmart and he took you over to the fish tanks and set you down next to a tank. Your eyes got very big, you reached out and touched the glass and said, "pishhhhhh."

I'll admit that I was hoping for "mama" as a first word, but I'm still pleased as punch that you are starting to communicate.

Love,
Mom
